Completely from the Spanish dependency, the Dominican Republic was freed in 1821, but a year later, it was seized by the neighboring Republic of Haiti. Only in 1844 after the next uprising, the Dominican Republic was proclaimed, with its capital in Santo Domingo. In 1861, the republic was again attacked by Spain and lost its independence. The southern coast of the country, stretched from Cape Pedernales, to Baihibe in the east.
